Title: Fierce Girl
Artist Statement: My inspiration for this piece, I was going for something easy and wouldn't take a lot of time to finish. The process I used was drawing the grid lines, mapping the piece out, shading, and using the cotton ball method.
Title: flower and the butterfly
Artist Statement:
My inspiration for this piece is that I chose something that fitted my interest. Also some people like sunflowers.
The process I used was mapping it out then going over it using the nib and the ink. Then I added some more things to my piece.
Title: Day at the beach
Artist Statement:
My inspiration for this piece is the beach is a place to go to relax to get your mind off of the negative and to clear your mind. When I look at this piece it gives me a peaceful feeling.
I began mapping the piece and then I used masking fluid so the paint wouldn't get on the sun. Then I under painted using the wet on wet and the wet on dry technique that my teach taught me how to do.
Title: Kanaloa
Artist Statement
My inspiration for this piece was the tiki god Kanaloa. I like the fact that he is the creator of the sea. I liked the idea of it but I think it was kind of hard for me to do.
The process I used was drawing my four sketches to see what I wanted my piece to look like. Then I mapped out my designs for my tiki and then I used the coil method to do the slip and score method on my piece. I finished the piece by adding and removing clay.
Title: The girl with many colors
Artist Statement:
My inspiration for this piece is that I chose something that fitted my interest. Also I love to do drawing and painting like this.
The process I used was mapping it out then I used white paint to paint in the areas where white paint was needed and also to make my colors stand out or POP. Then I painted the background and used black paint to paint in the areas where the paint was needed and used white paint again to outline the upper body (from the chest to the neck).
Title: Rain Flower
Artist Statement:
My piece is a flower with raindrops on it. The flower is zoomed in to make it look like one individual flower. This oil pastel piece I did I used certain colors that will be able to blend and make a pretty cool color for the flower. I used color and texture to create unity.
To create this piece I used oil pastels. I used some very helpful techniques to get it to look how I wanted to look. I used heavy to light pressure and also the 3 color heavy pressure technique. I also used a blending stump to blend or color in the spots that I could get into with the pastels.
The big idea for my piece was to create happiness and calmness also. My work was inspired by a piece on the internet and it showed a message. I can relate to this piece because I've always showed positive emotions ( the flower) to hide my negative emotions ( raindrops). The emotions I tried to show like how you feel in the outside verses how you really feel.
As an artist I feel like my goals are to try new things to see what interests me. This helped me reach it because I really like the media and it bring back memories of when I used to color with crayons except these are more advanced and different than the crayons. I also like how well they blend and the works of it.
I learned so much about pastels when I was creating this work. I experienced new things like the different blends and how easy it is to work with. The final piece is not what I imagined exactly but overall I liked it. This influenced me to try new techniques when creating something new and see what interest me the best.
Title: Girl Vitiligo
Artist Statement
My piece illustrates a girl who has a skin disease called vitiligo. She is zoomed in to the point where you can only see her face and part of the upper body. I created some colors that would meet my expectations of the colors that I needed. To create the texture I used some techniques that were very helpful. I feel that the light parts of her skin was the focal point in the piece I created. I used white to highlight those areas.
The media I used to create my piece was oil pastels. I used a lot of techniques to get to what I was aiming for. I used a lot of three color heavy pressure blends and also heavy and light pressure blends. I used a blending stump to fill in the little spots that my oil pastel couldn't.
The idea of my piece was to create an uplifting feeling which made me build up my own self esteem about my appearance. I hope and pray that others who view my piece will understand what I was trying to communicate because somehow not a lot of people understand what I was trying to communicate. My piece was inspired by this model named Winnie Harlow who also has the same condition as the girl in my piece and showed little girls who have low self
esteem that you should never be ashamed of your appearance whether you have a disease or not.
My goal for this piece was to improve on my art skills with oil pastel so it can look more realistic. I challenge myself to do things that I never thought I could do in art. I think that this piece proved a point into reaching my goal because it's hard creating a person using oil pastels.
My thoughts overall about this piece is that I think that this piece is very successful and I like the use of different texture that I used to create this piece. I learned a lot of things about oil pastels while working on my piece. This piece turned out good just like I wanted it to. I really like how the oil pastels proved me wrong on how I thought it was going to make my piece look. When I seen the picture I used the artist used markers for her version of the piece. When used other media's in my previous pieces such as the watercolor and acrylic paint I didn't have to wait for it to dry to put in details. This piece will influence my artwork in the future to used the new techniques that I used to create this piece.
Title: Bowling
Artist Statement:
My piece illustrates a bowling ball and bowling pins. The title of my piece is Bowling. The element is color and the principle is texture.
I started by mapping out my piece and then used a sharpie to go over the lines i drew but then i changed my media and used prisma color pencils started over. So I started remapping out my piece on black paper with a white color pencil. Then I colored in the pins and used a red color pencil to color in the stripes. I used different values of turquoise and a lime green to color in my bowling ball.
The big idea behind my artwork was to illustrate bowling ball hitting the bowling pins. Some people like to go bowling do i thought people would like the idea of my artwork. I also like to challenge myself because drawing those bowling pins were very hard for me to do.
My goal was to improve on my artwork using a different media. I feel like I reached this goal. Using unique colors to create a cool ombre type thing really looked good even though i thought i wouldn't .
Overall, I think this piece is creative and technically strong. I love the colors I mixed and the feeling the piece conveys. I took a risk painting something this large and painting over an almost complete tulip piece. I am satisfied with my choices and love the finished piece.
This piece overall is successful and creative. I like the outcome of it and the fact that it looks better than the previous one I did because i could've done better and I knew what I was capable of but I didn't put the work in.
